Morgan Maurèze is a fifth-generation winemaker who took charge of a portfolio built for collectors: wines you put away for ten years to grow in both taste and value. Septem is the first wine he created entirely for full expression the moment it arrives, without the gatekeeping of time.

The fruit comes from the estate’s youngest plantings. Where old vines reward patience, young vines meet you tonight. Young vine, young wine, on purpose. Drinkers are rewarded with sage and eucalyptus on the nose, then dark cherry and cassis. A silky entry, a midpalate of plum and dark chocolate mocha, black peppercorn at the close.

THE ESTATE BEHIND IT

Seven Apart organically farms two vineyards on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley: Base Camp on the valley floor, and Stags Ridge 1,475 feet up the mountain, where the soil changes from basalt to shale halfway across the vineyard. Roughly 2,000 cases a year. Four Cabernets. Allocation only.

The single-vineyard wines have scored as high as 99 points from critics including Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Advocate.
