Tasting Notes

The 2019 vintage is very much defined by high energy, fine focus, and generosity. The Expedition from 2019 is bright, polished and high-powered. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine is a tapestry of perfectly ripe fruit flavors.

The red-purple hue is notable, hinting at the freshness and intensity of the aromas. Red cherry, raspberry, and fresh tobacco come to mind, with notes of cinnamon, vanilla, graphite, and California bay.  On the palate there is a rush of red fruits, which continues to build in intensity as the wine is savored. The texture is incredibly fine-grained and silky, while the fruit at the wine’s core expands and lengthens on the finish.

Vineyards

At Seven Apart, we feel forward momentum and a sense of flow with all of the many tasks at hand. We are relentlessly making improvements to our Stags Ridge Vineyard on the top of Atlas Peak, from farming organically to precisely controlling the amount of water each vine receives. We are reimagining our Base Camp vineyard with an eye toward the future. These projects represent serious endeavors, and we feel the wines we produce each vintage are a snapshot of where we are at the time.

Our Expedition bottling is meant to highlight the quality of the vintage as a whole, with fruit from our estate vineyards Stags Ridge and Base Camp, and also from our partner growers. The result is a wine with a broad spectrum of flavors and textures, that speaks with the voice of the growing season.

Winemaking

We worked diligently to fine tune a blend that is powerful, structured, rich, and accessible all at once. The character of the wine is driven by dark, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon which makes up 91% of this blend, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot to bring complexity, spice, and nuance. After a controlled fermentation and long maceration on the skins, the wine was aged for eighteen months in French oak, 80% of the barrels being new. This rounded the tannins, and gave the wine a velvety texture.

Aging

This youthful wine is very intense—though accessible—right now, and will only gain in complexity and depth with time in the bottle. We think the wine’s true potential will be reached between 2024 and 2034.

Opaque purple-black in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Expedition erupts from the glass with explosive scents of boysenberry preserves, blueberry pie and Black Forest cake, plus suggestions of molten chocolate, licorice, tar and violets, with a waft of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is full-on rich and decadent, exuding layer upon layer of opulent black and blue fruit preserves with bags of exotic spice accents and a long, fragrant finish. Pure hedonism. It is tantalizingly delicious right now, but give it 3-4 years in bottle to blow off that puppy fat, and drink it over the next 25 years. 98+ Points — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Big, bold, tarry notes take on a mellower toasted marshmallow and dark chocolate for a breathtaking adventure of flavor and texture. Black fruit melts across the mouth. Well-built from the inside-out, a core of minerality is surrounded by fig preserves, dried violets, and a blackberry intensity. Tannins are pronounced, with a savory slide of satin meatiness. This wine is certainly on another level. 98 points. — Meridith May, Somm Journal
A DISTINCT VINEYARD

The 2019 Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon offers a first look at the 2019 vintage from Seven Apart. The grapes come from our estate Stags Ridge Vineyard and Base Camp Vineyard. Stags Ridge Vineyard is perched 1,475 feet above Napa Valley atop Atlas Peak and has consistently delivered fruit with remarkable power and intensity. The dense volcanic soil pushes the vines to the limit and rewards us with stunning wines. Base Camp Vineyard is seven miles down the mountain on the Silverado Trail and has a rich Napa history over many generations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many bottles can I purchase?

As a member of our Allocation List, you may purchase up to 36 bottles of the 2019 Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon. If previous sell outs are any indication, we expect this wine to go fast. Only 60 barrels of this wine was produced therefore there is little to go around.

Why can I only purchase in quantities of 3, 6, 12, 24, or 36 bottles?

We understand many would be interested in purchasing only 1 bottle of this wine; however, we can assure you that 1 bottle will not be enough to satisfy your cravings after your first sip. To truly enjoy and appreciate the 2019 Expedition, we suggest indulging in a few bottles when you receive your shipment and then aging the rest of your wines for a couple of years at a minimum. A bottle of this caliber will only get better with age!

How much does shipping cost and when will it ship?

Order will ship with complimentary ground service in California and complimentary overnight service in the rest of the US.

Orders typically ship within a few days of purchase. However, we may delay shipment if there is extreme heat or cold weather in your state. Even with overnight service, we take every precaution to ensure your wine arrives safely.

If I love this wine, will I be able to re-order it?

Due to the limited production of the 2019 Expedition, this will be your only chance to purchase this wine. We are humbled by the outpouring of support and inquiries about this release. Only 60 barrels of this wine were produced and we foresee selling out during this release.

With such high demand for this wine, we are limiting orders to a maximum of 36 bottles. We suggest purchasing your full allocation of 36 bottles as this will be your only opportunity to do so.
